A new laser developed at TSU allows sensing the atmosphere

Studies of gas lasers conducted by Tomsk scientists led to the creation of a unique laser source. It delivers discrete lasing wavelengths in a very wide spectral range from ultraviolet to infrared spectrum. The laser can be used in medicine, industrial production of digital electronics, and for sensing the atmosphere.

- Using this laser, it is possible to analyze the gas composition of the atmosphere and the content of various contaminants, as well as to draw conclusions about the content of microparticles in the atmosphere - says Professor Anatoly Soldatov, one of the main developers, Dean of the Faculty of Innovative Technologies of TSU.

- We are investigating parts of the spectrum that are most informative in terms of laser probing - says Oleg Romanovsky, Professor of Innovation Management Department, a senior fellow at the IAO SB RAS - We can determine the meteorological parameters of the atmosphere (including remote distribution of water vapor) and gas components: strong pollutants, toxins, explosives, or drugs. Above all, it is hydrogen cyanide, methane, and carbon dioxide.

This device is useful primarily for environmentalists, as well as large industrial enterprises interested in a clean, harmless production. It will provide an opportunity for industrialists to know exactly what they emit, and diagnose the work of technical installations.

In addition, the installation is proposed for use in the analysis of man-made air disasters. Some features of the multi-wavelength laser already have become interesting to the defense industry.
