On April 19, a regular event from the series of country presentations was held at TSU. It was dedicated to the celebration of Lao New Year, and 11 students from Laos introduced their guests for this holiday to the history and culture of their country. Such events contribute to the development of intercultural dialogue and allow Russian and international students to know each other better.
The presentation, prepared by the joint efforts of international students, employees of the International Student Services Centre, and TSU Online volunteers, was organized in the form of a concert. The organizers spoke about famous architectural constructions and natural landmarks of their country, showed the coat of arms and the flag, and also told the guests about the flower Dok Champa (Plumeria rubra), which is a symbol of Laos.
The students introduced the traditions and history of the Lao New Year, which is celebrated at the hottest time of the year - in April. New Year for Lao people is connected with the arrival of spring and the beginning of new life, and is filled with flowers and bright colors. During the days of celebration, water is poured over everyone, which symbolizes spiritual purification.
- It was our first presentation, and it was unexpected that we were able to prepare such a wonderful event, - says Phonkeo Vinawat, one of the Lao students at TSU. - Our celebration of New Year would not have been possible without the excellent volunteers and support of the International Student Services Centre. We want to sincerely thank you for always helping us.
Guests enjoyed seeing national Lao dances, songs, and costumes, and they had the chance to take part in the traditional national game. In addition, guests were invited to try the national food and Lao coffee. The congratulatory performances for the concert were also prepared by students from France, China, Vietnam, and Russia.
TSU is planning to hold presentations about the countries of Europe, Asia, and Africa.
