Tomsk State University is conducting the third Siberian International Chopin Piano Competition. It is held by the Institute of Arts and Culture every 3 years and is the only one in the whole territory from the Urals to the Far East.

This year, more than 40 participants from 9 to 23 years old, from different regions of Russia, as well as Poland, Estonia, and Kazakhstan came to demonstrate their skills. They have an audition with the jury, in which are included well-known artists and figures of musical art from Russia, Poland, France, the USA, and Israel.

- This is important when the classical university, the centre of education and science, is also a centre of culture, - said Georgiy Mayer at the opening ceremony. - Because without genuine culture is impossible to have good skills in any area.

Auditions are held at three locations: the Assembly Hall of TSU, the Crystal Hall of Tomsk College of Music named after E.V. Denisov, and the Organ Hall of Tomsk Regional State Philharmonic Society. The gala concert of the festival will be held on 20 May from 13.00 to 15.00 at TSU. In addition, within the Siberian International Chopin Piano Competition, the programme includes such activities as the international scientific-practical conference The Role of Chopin in the World Culture, a lecture on music therapy professor Guldana Zholymbetova (USA), and master classes from the jury.

- The aim of our competition is, above all, increasing the level of performance of our Tomsk pianists. Secondly, it is familiarity with the European piano school and thirdly it is the strengthening and development of international relations between the performers, pianists, and teachers, - says Ludmila Bulgakova, head of the Department of Instrumental Performance of TSU.

At the third Siberian International Chopin Piano Competition Tomsk is represented by 8 young artists, two of them students of TSU.
