TSU is the one Tomsk university among the top 50 best universities in the BRICS countries

The British consulting company Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) has published a list of the best universities in the BRICS countries. Based on the rating criteria, Tomsk State University is 44 in the list.

QS World University Rankings: BRICS 2015 used the following 8 key criteria for evaluating universities: academic reputation, employer reputation, faculty student ratio, staff with PhD, international faculty, international students, Web impact, papers per faculty, and citations per paper.

In the overall ranking for 2015, TSU took 44th place, three lines higher compared to the previous year.

-The universities of India, South Africa and Brazil have already entered the top 200 and continue to rise. It should be borne in mind that we are competing with all these universities. We went three lines higher in the much more competitive environment than a year ago - said Artem Rykun, Vice-Rector for International Affairs.

According to the Vice-Rector, the fact that TSU rose in the rankings is connected with its becoming more known among the world's academic community:

- Of course, the reasons for this growth are the efforts made by the University and the innovations that have occurred in recent years. We are concentrating resources and have created centres of excellence, strong new laboratories, and some new useful and unique services. We were able to mobilize. However, it seems to me that the increase in the rating should not be viewed only as a reflection of quick wins. I do not think that TSU has changed radically. It is the same university that we all know and love, where we studied. It is this university, not any other, that has risen in the world rankings. At the same time, we were able to convert the reputation that TSU had at the national level, in a sense, understandable and recognizable to the global academic community, to create a sort of modern interface - said Artem Rykun.

In total, there are 50 Russian universities included in the list. Only one of them – Moscow State University – ranked in the Top-10 (finishing in fourth place). In the Top-50 are 7 Russian universities. Among Tomsk universities, in addition to TSU the rating also includes TPU (64th place) and TUSUR (121st – 130th place).
