The faculty of applied mathematics was established as a part of Tomsk University in 1970 by order of the Minister of Higher and Secondary Special Education of the Russian Federation. In the early 80s, it was renamed the Faculty of Applied Mathematics and Cybernetics.

The faculty has seven departments: department of Operations Research, department of Theoretical Cybernetics, department of Programming, department of Probability Theory and Mathematical Statistics, department of Applied Mathematics, department of Mathematics and Mathematical Modelling, department of Data protection and Cryptography.

The pedagogical staff consists of 19 D.Sc. and 34 Cand. Sc. in Engineering and Physics and Mathematics. The faculty has a laboratory of data protection equipment and a research laboratory of computer security for students. The Faculty of Applied Mathematics and Cybernetics in cooperation with Siberian Physics and Technics Institute has a research educational center "Computer studies and Information Technology", department of "Computer Science". The faculty has also a dissertation council considering the awarding of Cand. Sc. and D.Sc. degrees in System analysis, management and data processing.
